Obituary: Brother Herman Fenton (1913-2009)

Brother Herman Fenton passed away peacefully Saturday, 21st February, 2009 at 4:30 pm.

The funeral service for Brother Herman will be held on Wednesday, 25th February, 2009, in St Teresaˇ¦s Church, Kowloon, at 9:30 am, followed by the burial at the Happy Valley St Michael Catholic Cemetery.

Brother Herman was born in County Limerick, Ireland in April 1913. He arrived in Hong Kong together with Brother Raphael Egan in October 1947. He and Brother Raphael joined the La Salle College community, and Brother Herman taught in LSC from 1947 to 1969. Brother Herman was for a time the Sports Master of the school. While still teaching in LSC, in 1965, Brother Herman founded the La Salle Evening School, which used the LSC campus from 3:30 pm to 8 pm on school days, and many of the teachers in the evening school were teachers in LSC. This school, with over 500 students, was the Brothersˇ¦ response to the great demands in Hong Kong for more school places at the time. In 1969, the Evening School moved to a newly build campus in Homantin, and it became Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College, with Brother Herman as the Founder and her first Principal.

At the 40th Anniversary celebrations of Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College held earlier this month, Brother Patrick Tierney, Guest of Honour of the opening ceremony, shared the following on Brother Herman, the Founder of the school:

"Although we are sorry he cannot be with us today, we thank God that Brother Herman is still alive and still keenly interested in the affairs of the College. In fact he holds the distinction of having founded 3 schools in all: La Salle Evening School, Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College and Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) Primary School."

The celebrations of CSK's 40th anniversary and Brother Patrick's remarks can be found in the most recent (Eleventh Issue, February 2009) The Gateway newsletter. ( see http://www.lscoba.com/almamater/the_gateway/The_Gateway_Eleventh_Issue.pdf )

Brother Herman has been a witness to La Salle Collegeˇ¦s many landmark events. He arrived in HK in 1947 to see La Salle College recouping from the Second World War. When was there when the British Army took over the campus and put the school in Perth Street hutments. In 1959, he witnessed the come back to the La Salle Road campus, and a few years after, he began his work with the Evening School and subsequently Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College and later Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) Primary School. He also lived through the decision to demolish the old La Salle building and the building of the new campus in the late 1970s. Brother Herman remained active in the CSK front throughout his life, and lived on the Brother quarters on campus for many years. It was in the last few years that Brother Herman moved to live in La Salle College.

Up to his last days, Brother Herman had always been alert and followed the developments and affairs of CSK closely. We are sure that Brother Herman was very pleased with the significant milestone that the Chan Sui Ki (La Salle) College had reached 40 years after his founding of the school.

Brother Herman passed away peacefully in the afternoon on 21st February 2009 at the ripe old age of 95.

Meanwhile, old boys can leave remembrance messages on the Lasallians Remembered section of this website, see: http://www.lscoba.com/significant/viewperson_detail.php?person_id=122
